Kierkegaard
A Dutch-Danish co-production with
Juhler Film, directed by Anne Regitze Wivel
A daring, artistically uncompromising film about one of the greatest
European philosofers, employing the oral tradition as a gateway into
the world of Søren Kierkegaard. The film was shot at a Danish
folkehøjskole, where we meet a group of students as they intently
follow theire lectures and the ensuing debates.
At intervals we are greeted by a series of relevant quotations from
the works of Søren Kierkegaard. On the visual side, the listening,
debating faces give way to a tranquil record of the wonders of nature
– flowers, birds, examples of a simple existence purged of man’s
“double reflection”.
The film is a portrait of Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy, and at the
same time a captivating visual portrayal of the possibilities inherent
in dialogue, where communication is transformed into moving images.
The plot of the film, which concerns life and death, is left up to the
individual cinema-goer and his or her own stage. Avoiding undue haste,
utilizing a few, simple means, the film “thinks” its way into everyone
who sees it, and turns him or her into the leading character. That is
this film’s scoop. – Asger Schnack
