Drijfland
(Drift land)
by Nico Boink
A documentary about Dutch 1960’s icon artist Robert Jasper
Grootveld – former ‘provo’ and ‘anti-smoke-magician’ – and his
life’s work the ‘floating islands’.
In October 1999, Boink hears about a large subsidy awarded for
the production of Grootveld’s life’s work: floating islands
based on polystyrene foam. He is immediately fascinated,
contacts the artist and they meet the same day. But what starts
off as a documentary film about the making of the floating
islands, turns into an intense personal document when the artist
suffers a mental disorder causing the work to come to a abrupt
standstill.
